An ideal telecommunications project for our firm is one where we collaborate with the client at an early stage to develop a network concept, define the project requirements, design the network infrastructure, build/construct the physical infrastructure, perform long-term maintenance services on behalf of the customer and assist the customer on monetizing the infrastructure.
We are searching for a team-oriented individual to fill a Customer Sales Engineer position within our Project Development group. This is an excellent telecom-related career-building opportunity for the right person. The position does not have direct sales responsibility, nor does it report to Sales or Business Development. The position is part of a separate, autonomous Project Development group responsible for solution development and sales support without any direct sales responsibility.
Ideally, this person is experienced in fiber optic telecommunication networks, Fiber to the Premise (FTTP / FTTX) networks or designing and/or managing related telecom construction projects. The selected candidate’s can-do attitude, personal motivation and willingness to contribute to the work of a team member is absolutely essential. We’re willing to train and invest in the right person. Experience can range from 3 years full time post college to seasoned telecom project professional.
This is not a customer service, software development, computer engineering, help desk or IT-related position.
This individual will develop technical solutions, compose associated technical writing and assist with cost estimates for the purpose of capturing new business and responding to requests for proposals (RFPs). This individual will work closely with Business Development, Marketing, Estimating and the Engineering staff to develop innovative, accurate and bid-winning solutions to drive growth in this exciting and entrepreneurial-spirited organization.
This position involves solution engineering, sales and pre-sales engineering, project planning, resource planning and proposal development to support new telecom construction project business development opportunities. Our ideal candidate will be innovative, flexible and willing to tackle new ideas and challenges.
Essential Job Duties
Complete high-level solutions and designs, estimates, technical writing and cost reviews for Fiber to the Home, telecommunications, smart city and intelligent transportation systems.
Develop high-level designs of telecommunications systems, including FTTx and fiber optic route design, general networking equipment, fiber optic network communications equipment, wireless network communications equipment, communications power and battery backup systems, etc.
Create high-level design of ITS, including roadway sensors, roadway cameras and license plate systems, messaging signs, roadway weather stations, parking detection systems, traffic speed and detection systems, etc.
Travel as required. Up to 10%, but typically less than 5%. 1-2 week of notice to travel is normal, but it solely driven by customer needs.
Review bid and proposal documents.
Attend site visits and pre-bid meetings with customers to establish design and bid criteria.
Define equipment, quantity take-offs and compile Bill of Materials
Work with CAD/GIS department to produce design drawings and diagrams.
Write compelling proposal content and technical writing, including process, approach and implementation plan.
Develop project schedules.
Attend and provide technical presentations to potential customers in support of sales efforts.
Continuously updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities, reading professional publications, maintaining personal networks and participating in professional organizations.

Education
Although a four-year degree is not required (although preferred), the ideal candidate will have some type of degree in a technical field such as electrical engineering, network engineering, civil engineering, technical electronics, engineering technology, advanced integrated technology, computer science or related scientific field of study. The right attitude, desire and experience are more important than any other consideration. Experience can be substituted for education for the right candidate, but some level of telecom-related experience is required. If you understand how communications technology and field level construction come together, you are a strong candidate.
Skills and Qualifications
Fiber optic knowledge is a minimum attribute required. We understand that no candidate will have all the desired experiences and knowledge, but a combination of a majority of the following is preferred.
Understanding of network technology and electronics.
Experience in presenting technical material to potential customers and clients.
Knowledge of fiber optics and telecommunications systems and architecture (Ethernet, DMVM, FTTH, SONET, true open access networks, etc.).
Knowledge of telecommunications outside and inside plant infrastructure design and products required.
Knowledge of ITS applications and systems (RWIS, microwave detectors, ATMS, loop detectors, video cameras, DMS/VMS signs, LPR cameras, WIM, WWDS, TPIMS/TPAS, etc.).
Knowledge of Smart City applications and systems (smart parking, public safety CCTV, public address systems, mass notification systems, traffic monitoring, public Wi-Fi, smart LED lighting)
Demonstrated excellent people skills.
Able to identify solutions to fiber optic deployment problems.
Demonstrated excellent communications skills (written and verbal) and be fluent in English at a technical and business level.
Demonstrated excellent organizational skills and be detail oriented.
Thorough knowledge of Microsoft office products, including MS Teams, MS Visio, MS Project, MS Excel and SharePoint.
Knowledge and experience in GIS systems, fiber and asset management software, field data collection programs and construction management platforms is desired.
General knowledge of construction estimating, budgeting, project scheduling and contracts is desirable, but not required.
Experience physically working on utility-related construction project sites is desirable, but not required.
Telecom infrastructure projects sales experience is desirable, but not required. Prior experience selling lit services is not an experience that is weighted with a preference.
Understanding of fiber deployment cost factors with the ability to apply this to high level designs and cost estimates.
Certified Fiber to the Home Professional (CFHP) certification will be looked upon favorably.
Understanding of inside plant services operations.

Must have a suitable work environment and location for fully remote work (i.e., minimal distractions, acceptable location for video conferencing, adequate internet connectivity, etc.)

Required to walk on potential construction sites in rough terrain and climb ladders and facilities under construction.
Occasionally required to stand for long periods of time.
May be required to lift and/or move up to 10 lbs. and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 lbs.
Work environment
While performing the duties of this job, the incumbent may split time between a home/remote office environment and on employer or customer sites where there is moderate to occasional great noise levels.
Language Skills
Must have the ability to read, analyze, and interpret engineering and construction drawings and specifications, common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and other documents.
